June Newsletter

Spring Farm Alpacas – June Newsletter

June is one of the busiest months of the year at Spring Farm. No sooner than we had finished the alpaca “showing” season, we then had the whole herd sheared on the 2nd June. Shearing day is pretty full on – but this year was much worse than normal as the weather forecast was heavy rain and strong winds. So we had to keep all the alpacas in the barns overnight as you can’t shear when they are soaking wet! Alpacas are great at holding their bladders etc. until one of them goes to the toilet – at which point they all join in! We spent the first hour of the day just cleaning up – but were finally done by 8pm!

We now have our full complement of Llamas as Rosselli and Eron have been joined by two amazing girls – Suada and Mandola. Llamas are camelids – like alpacas – but were bred by the Incas as pack animals so are capable of taking a load on their backs. They differ from alpacas in being nearly twice the weight/size, having banana shaped ears, and hold their tails up as they walk. Some would say they are a bit more aloof – but in reality they all get on pretty well. Suada and Mandola are now in with our non-birthing females and Rosselli and Eron have now joined our junior males and are eating out of our hands.

At the time of writing this, we have 22 cria (baby alpacas) on the ground and are expecting 3 more for this year.

The alpaca walking is going really well. We are now doing walks most days of the week but have tried to limit it to just the one walk a day. This is so we can offer a “Rolls-Royce” service and not be rushing people off the farm so as to welcome a new group. Typically we allow up to an hour for the walk and then spend some time with the mum’s and babies and talking about fibre/fleece.

The fields are at their most impressive as we are not able to cut our hay until 15th July owing to the farm being in Higher Level Stewardship. This is an agro-environmental agreement which we are now in the second ten year phase of. In short, it means we don’t use fertilisers, pesticides and manage the farm for maximum bio-diversity and wildlife benefit. As we walk the alpacas we normally see wild fallow deer as the females have been birthing in our fields, and they leave their fawns in the long grass whilst they forage.

After a female alpaca gives birth, she is at her most fertile in just two weeks. So we are arranging “romantic encounters” for our females with our stud male alpacas. Typically, a male is chosen based on their fibre qualities, fleece colour and conformation. As Spring Farm has some of the most exciting genetics in the UK, we are also very busy taking our stud males out in our tailor made van to visit other breeder’s females. This is an integral part of the business but means we spend a lot of time on the road/M25! The breeding season is quite short – it starts in mid May – and will be over by the end of August.

So, it’s an exciting time with lots of babies running round the fields, great weather (on the whole), the hay cut and in the barns (hopefully) and our social life re-instated! Come and visit us soon.

Birthday and anniversary walk with alpacas

Lorraine and Adrian

Its a lovely thing to be able to celebrate a birthday with an alpaca walk. So we were very lucky this weekend to welcome Lorraine and Adrian – it was Lorriane’s birthday! What we didn’t know is that it was also Lorraine and Adrian’s 40th wedding anniversary as well!!

So Lorraine and Adrian came for two walks – one on Saturday in blazing sunshine and then came back again today (Sunday) in cloudy, cool conditions.

Having plenty of time on our hands, it meant that we could spend lots of time with the mum’s and babies group as well as two long walks.

Alpaca trekking in Sussex!

We have been very lucky with the weather over the last week and have also had Polly – an RVC student – with us. Sometimes, there is nothing better than haltering up our alpacas and heading out into the farm to make the most of the weather.

As you can see, Polly, Millie, Joelle and Den are having a great time – I just wish I could have gone to …but stuck at my desk.

We try and give our RVC students a real understanding of alpacas, ownership, husbandry and health issues. We don’t just view our students as volunteer poo pickers – although we don’t let them escape completely! After all, a rounded education is surely a good thing….

Sunny days – meet Pixie on an alpaca walk

On an alpaca walk here at Spring Farm Alpacas, you will get to meet our mum’s and babies group. This year we have 20 babies now on the ground – all fit and bouncing around the fields. After your alpaca walk, you get a chance to spend some quality time with this group of super friendly alpacas. Mind you, the mums constantly remind the baby alpacas to be careful of the humans…trouble is, they don’t always pay attention to their mums and their natural curiosity overcomes them and they will come up to you and if you are very quiet and reach out, chances are they will enjoy your company as much as we enjoy theirs!

On these long Summer days, the babies spend a lot of time fast asleep. They wake up regularly though to ask their mums for a drink of milk and then can’t resist exploring or going chasing round the fields. After your alpaca trek, come and meet them and perhaps you can persuade Pixie to wake up and come over to play!

We are right in the middle of our birthing season here at Spring Farm Alpacas. We now have 19 baby alpacas (Cria) in our Mum’s and babies paddock and are due 7 more over the next month or so. This year is a “P” year so all the babies of ours start with the letter P. So far we have: Poppy, Penelope,

Princess, Paloma, Porsche, Paris, Perseus, Pavlova, Phoebe, Pixie, Pippi Longstocking, Pharoah, Pandora, Prince, Peter Pan, Persephone, Polyanna, Phantom….and one we can’t quite decide on.

The baby alpacas spend most of their days lolling around, asking for milk, playing and then just before dusk, they go on a “mad half hour” when the bomb around their field, annoying the grown ups, to get their blood temperature raised before settling down next to their mums for the night.

Life you come alpaca walking with us, you will get to meet all the above babies and if very lucky, get to see a birth! Please contact us to arrange your walk and to spend some quality time with these amazing creatures.

Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence 2015

Alpaca walking with Spring Farm Alpacas is very proud to have been awarded the Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence 2015. We have a 5 star rating from Tripadvisor and to be honest, we could not have achieved this without the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of our walking team.

So take a bow Vicki, Millie and Coral – you have earned it! We only started our alpaca walking safaris a year ago and to have achieved this award in one year is no mean feat! We look to build on this and hope this is just the start. Contact us here at Alpaca Walking with Spring Farm Alpacas to see if you agree with Tripadvisor!

Alpaca females are pregnant for approximately eleven and a half months and then normally only have one cria. In the UK at the moment, we are only aware of a small handful of twins.
